The Short, Short Story (150 Words or Less) is an amazing way to open your fictional channels, without too much commitment. (hum, committments- aren't they foreign to most writers?...except in the case of a book contract!) Here is mine:
Red Hot Dumplings-Well Smoked!
She stood outside the window and looked in. Hesitating, she opened the door. Would it matter she was there? Would anyone care? At home, sat a man with a beer in his hand, watching the TV; around his chair the remnants of Marlboro filters. Walking into the living area she could still imagine the smell of homemade chicken-n-dumplings wafting from the kitchen in the back of the house. Looking down, shadowed on the floor an image-once pooled crimson, or was it an illusion? Curtains hung in perfect order, with furniture waiting for human warmth. Was there ever really warmth here? Down the hall to the kitchen- still in disarray- a drawer on the floor- the screen door ripped and flailing from the outside wind- glass still shattered on the floor. What were the last thoughts between dumplings and death? In a crevasse, a butt remained stilled; almost up in smoke.
